GridlockPARTS of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was on Thursday plunged under severe traffic gridlock, causing distress to many commuters.

The areas mostly affected are Abuja-Keffi road, Nyanja-Karshi road and adjoining areas such as Karu, Mararaba in Nasarawa state and parts of Asokoro Abuja.

The gridlock has been blamed on members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) popularly known as Shiites who are observing their religious rite, Ashura.

TribuneOnline gathered that the traffic flow from Jos, Keffi and other cities at that axis into the FCT was disrupted because of security measures put in place to avert possible breakdown of law and order during the Shiites’ demonstration.

Consequently, vehicles plying the affected areas have found themselves spending up to four hours for distances that would usually take about 15 minutes.

As at the time of this report (2 pm), there was no succour in sight for the hapless commuters.
