Varsity workers threaten fresh strike over unpaid N8bn allowance
By The three non teaching staff unions of Nigerian universities have threatened to begin nationwide industrial action on Friday, 25th May, 2018.
The threat notice was issued by the joint action committee of the unions, sequel to Federal Government’s failure to honour the tripartite agreement signed by the parties.
They alleged that Federal Government failed to pay part of the Owed Earned Allowances estimated at over N8 billion, two months after they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The resolution was reached at the end of an emergency meeting held in Abuja.
However, the National Executive Council of the three unions are expected to meet on Friday to take final decision.
The unions are: Senior Staff of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non Academic Staff Unions of Associated and Educational Institutions (NASU) as well as National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
According to JAC, Federal Government had agreed to start paying about N8 billion within five weeks.
Samson Ugwoke, SSANU President who confirmed the threat notice explained that the unions demanded for over N50 billion.
He however observed that the sum of N23 billion had earlier been released to both Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the three non teaching staff unions, but ASUU had claimed ownership of the money which led to a prolonged action by the non teaching staff.
