Mallam Adamu Adamu,
Minister of Education

THE federal government has pledged to ensure strict implementation of programmes and projects in order to achieve key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relating to the education sector by 2030.

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who said this in Abuja at a two-day implementation status meeting of the 2017 SDG4 beneficiaries, warned stakeholders in the sector against cutting corners and misapplying resources provided for implementation of the SDGs.

He said Nigeria could not achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) due of poor implementation.

Adamu, therefore, called on the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the resources available to them while urging them to ensure that the projects and programmes are fully channeled to the purpose they were intended.

The minister, who was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr Sonny Echono, explained that the SDG4 intervention in the Federal Government Colleges was geared towards addressing decay in the system through provision of toilets and bathrooms in hostels and classrooms, provision of solar-powered motorised boreholes, reticulation of water to hostels, provision of modern kitchen and dining facilities.

He lamented that administrative lapses and poor implementation strategies were factors that militated against full attainment of MDGs despite its laudable objectives as outlined by the United Nations.

The Nigerian Tribune recalls that by 2015 when the MDGs elapsed and paved way for the current SDGs, gender inequality, poverty, increase in carbon dioxide emissions and water scarcity topped the list of goals that were not achieved.

Till date, the United Nations assessment reveals that poor representation of women still persists in parliaments with more girls still out of school. The goal also sought to ensure that every child in the world got education, but access to quality education still remains elusive in Nigeria.

The minister said measures were in place to train monitoring and evaluation officers so as to avoid some of the lapses already identified.

“Let me emphasize that, all projects executed by the ministry of education will be subjected to rigorous monitoring at different stages.

“Experiences have shown that there were cases where officials knew what to do but refused to take action because of personal interest; while other lapses were due to lack of experience or capacity.

“Nigeria’s commitment to achieving SDGs forms the basis of our emphasis on proper projects implementation,” the minister stated.

Meanwhile, Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Mrs Adejoke Adefulire, said the 2030 target date for realising the global SDGs would be a mirage if educational challenges remain unresolved.

According to her, attaining SDGs by 2030 would encompass a functional education system, one that is accessible by all and responsive to the requirements of 21st century skills.
