CourtA Kubwa Grade I Area Court, on Wednesday, remanded a 45-year-old businessman, Chukwudi Nweke, in police custody over alleged threat to life and cheating.

The judge, Abdulwahab Mohammed, who gave the order, following an application filed by the prosecutor, Urom Otu, said the remand is to enable the police to conclude investigations.

Mohammed adjourned the case until Dec 6.

The defendant is charged with three counts of criminal conspiracy, intimidation and cheating.

The prosecutor, Otu, had told the court that one Aminu Ahmed reported the matter to the Inspector-General of Police on Nov. 1.

Otu said the complainant bought three plots of land situated at Lugbe, Abuja from the defendant at N5 million each in 2015.

He alleged that someone trespassed into one of the plots and started developing it sometime in August 2018.

“When the complainant informed the defendant, he admitted having resold the land to someone else and also threatened to kill the complainant if he dared him.

“The defendant also took thugs with guns to the said land and they started shooting sporadically,’’ he said.

Otu said that the defendant sent thugs to monitor the complainant’s movements in an attempt to kill him.

“Due to constant monitoring of the complainant movement by thugs sent by the defendant, went into hiding for fear of being killed,’’ he said.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 97, 322 and 397 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.
