Respect rule of law, human rights, IGP charges police officers
By Officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force have been charged to have respect for the rule of law, fundamental human rights and be loyal to the nation as well as be resolute and total in the discharge of their professional duties of policing the community.
The charge was given by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Kpotun Idris at the passing out parade of 249 Police Constables held at the Police Training College, Bauchi on Saturday.
The IGP also encouraged the new Policemen and women to always toe the line of honour and shun acts capable of tarnishing the image of the Force declaring that, “there is no place for corrupt, indolent and disgruntled officers because erring officers will continue to receive commensurate punishments”.
The Police Boss whose speech was read by the DCP Administration of the Bauchi State Command Aliyu Adamu Alhaji declared that the Nigerian Police Force is mindful of pattern and methodology of crime and criminality thereby ensuring that trainees turned out with a high level of professionalism.
He further stated that the recruits training manuals have been reviewed to meet the demands of contemporary policing as seasoned security experts and consultants were deployed to impart knowledge on the trainees just as they also take training in community policing, maintaining peace in conflict areas and the use of firearms and public order act.

Ibrahim Idris also stated that in order to meet up with the United Nations recommendation ratio of 1 Police to 400 people, the Federal Government has thought it wise to commence recruitment of another 10,000 Policemen just as funds have been approved and made available for the four premier colleges in Ikeja, Kaduna, Oji-River, Maiduguri and other Police Training Schools across the country.
He then said that the passing out parade came at the right time as the preparations for the 2019 general elections will soon commence adding that the exercise will improve the present strength of the force which as at now stand at approximately 300,000 Policemen.
While stressing that the Police Force has the sole responsibility of policing in any democratic setting, the IGP said that this could only be achieved through professional competence training acquired and available equipment.
He pointed out that the rapid changes in the nation and the democratic process impose huge challenges on the Nigerian Police Force to adjust positively to the new dispensation and become proactive in her planning efforts especially if it must develop the capacity for junior cadres.
The IGP assured that “our goal is to ensure that the members of the Force are made more competent, more confident and more efficient in the art and science of modern policing.”
Some of the constables who graduated from the training school expressed their determination to put in their best in the area of effective community policing and commended the police authority for giving them the most important and modern training.
