The Director General, National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye has described the news of about 70 percent substandard drugs in Nigeria as fake.

The DG made this known to newsmen yesterday at a briefing tagged: The sad and unfortunate press release about 70 percent of drugs in Nigeria being fake, in Lagos.

“It is fake news because it is not true. NAFDAC does a lot of work in terms of monitoring substandard falsified medicines.

“As you are all aware that we had a conference in 2017, the keynote speaker categorically mentioned that 17 percent of our drugs in circulation are fake particularly anti-malaria drugs.

“He quoted the former DG NAFDAC, who also was lamenting that drugs in Nigeria from 15 to 17 percent are fake. This is not true. So many are quoting unreliable data.

“Instead of mentioning the 17 percent, one online newspapers quoted 70 percent and immediately we debunked it, saying the Speaker never said 70 percent and he also came out that he had never said 70 but 17 percent. He added that even the 17 percent was read from a literature.

She added that there was also a misrepresentation of 70 percent imported products and the 30 percent locally produced pharmaceutical products.

“So, they keep on hearing 70 percent and that is the National Drug Policy that says we want by 2015 we should produce our pharmaceutical products 70 percent and 30 percent imported.

“Unfortunately, we are still importing 70 percent and 30 percent locally. I want to tell you that we have never seen any locally produced drug that is fake unless if that company is not registered” DG said.

Professor Mojisola encouraged local drug manufacturing for the purpose of drug security in the country in order to prevent unexpected diseases.

“If we don’t have local manufacturers, we are all in trouble. I am for local manufacturing. NAFDAC is supporting our local manufacturers so that we depend less on importation and have our own manufacturing.

“Why should we have our own local manufacturing- Drug security. Before HIV/AIDS and people started getting treatment, a lot of people in Africa died because there were no drugs. So, for drug security, we need local manufacturers” She said.
