Scores escape death as storey building under construction collapses in Delta

Two siblings on Friday escape death as a two-storey building that was under construction, collapsed at Marine Quarters in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The building collapsed few minutes past 1:00 p.m, also affected parts of two other near residential houses one of which the two siblings lived.

The younger, a lady, who had rushed to call her brother who was asleep in the adjourning house in one of the two impacted houses, escaped death by the whiskers with his brother.

Furthermore, no life was lost because scores of builders usually working on the building were said to be absent from the site due to heavy afternoon downpour.

Residents of the area were seen thanking God that no lives were lost, just as a welder working on the site was seen evacuating his welding machine and other equipment.

Chairman of Marine Quarters, Mr Olusegun Awodiyi, stated that residents in the area had earlier warned the owner of the building that the foundation and other parts of the building had defects due to substandard materials.

Awodiyi said rather than make use of standard materials, the owner of the building ignored all entreaties, claiming he was a qualified engineer.

Awodiyi urged the Delta State Government to move into the area to carry out integrity test on another house purportedly belonging the said owner of the collapsed building to avoid impending tragedy in the area.

Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Dr Michael Tidi, who was represented by his Vice, Chief (Mrs.) Divine Inovosa, thanked God for safety just as he attributed the building collapse to the usage of poor building materials.

Chief (Mrs.) Iniovosa, who advised Deltans to employ the services of an engineer before embarking on any building projects, disclosed that the council will invite the owner of the building, who was said to be on the run, to give reasons why the building collapsed.
