We’re positive Makinde will lift Oyo NURTW ban in one week time ― Yasin

NURTW

Fifteen days after Governor Seyi Makinde proscribed the Oyo state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), national president of the union, Mr Najeem Yasin, on Friday, expressed optimism that the ban will be lifted in one week time.

Yasin expressed this optimism while addressing journalists after a meeting held with Makinde and security chiefs at governor’s office, Ibadan.

Yasin said he set for himself the one-week deadline to meet with the warring divides of the union to resolve the issues which was the prerequisite given by Governor Makinde to unban the NURTW.

While stressing that he had obtained the assurances of Makinde to unban the union once he could guarantee peaceful coexistence of members of the union in the state, Yasin said he was in consonance with steps taken by the government to guarantee peace.

Yasin said he was not averse to security agencies dealing with any individual that threatened the security of the state, adding that he was convinced on Makinde’s argument that the NURTW ban was to ensure security in the state and not with any other ulterior motive.

“We have agreed on the point that he proscribed the union owing to the threat to security and in the interest of peace in the state.

“He asked me to work to assure him that our members remain in peace and that by the time, I do that, he is ready to unban the union.

“He said that if I can do it today, he will unban it. Within now and one week, we will work it out and immediately we give him assurance, it will be unbanned.

“No one is above the law, we want peace and we have told the security agencies that no one can hold the state to ransom,” Yasin said.

Affirming the meeting resolution, Makinde’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Taiwo Adisa, said the ban will be reconsidered once the NURTW leadership gets the needed assurances of peace and if security report on the issue was favourable.
