Football loving Nigerians have taken to social media to express their huge disappointment over the Super Eagle’s loss to Croatia in their first World Cup match in Russia. An own goal and a penalty gave Croatia a comfortable win over Nigerian in their Group D clash at the Kaliningrad Stadium on Saturday.

On social media, many Nigerians expressed the view that the Super Eagles did play well enough.

@DrJoeAbah twitted “The coach must take responsibility for this loss. Players lacked energy and looked tired and lethargic, positioning was wrong with Mikel playing too far forward, he should have taken off Mikel, not Iwobi, and he made each change 10 minutes too late”

@Aliyu_Abubakar1 twitted “Jay Jay has nailed it and it’s the absolute truth. We are playing Iwobi out of position to accommodate Mikel, he said. Fact is the Nigerian Captain is past his prime. Very sluggish and doesn’t deserve to start in our games. I want to believe the coach will bring changes next match.”

Some fans also took aim at Moses for falling too frequently, while others just decided to make jokes out of the outcome of the match.

@gimbakakanda twitted “Super Eagles are those best-dressed classmates in secondary school, who have all the swags. And all the Fs”

A diving header from Mario Mandzukic was deflected into the net by Nigeria midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo after 32 minutes to hand Croatia the half-time lead, doubled by Luka Modric’s successful penalty kick in the 71st minute.

It was awarded after Nigeria defender William Troost-Ekong wrestled Mandzukic to the ground right in front of the referee, wrapping both arms around the striker as they jostled for space in the Nigeria box.

Croatia now top Group D after Argentina and Iceland drew 1-1 in Moscow earlier on Saturday.
