Killings, fulani herdsmen, Muhammadu BuhariArchbishop of Jos Province, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to take cogent steps against of incessant killings of by Fulani herdsmen. He said it was wrong to equate the lives of human beings with those cows as being done by the Fulani herdsmen.

The Archbishop, who was concerned about the recent killings in Plateau State and other parts of the country, said this during an interview with TribuneChurch in Benin City on Thursday.

He warned that people should not be pushed to the wall, to the extent of resorting to self-defence.

Most Rev. Ndukuba, who is also the Bishop of Gombe Diocese noted: “What is happening is very disheartening in the sense that Christians communities are being attacked so savagely and not so much is being done. Nobody has been arrested or prosecuted and held responsible for the killings of people and burning down villages.

“But, just early this year, there was kind of misunderstanding between herdsmen and farmers in Numa where some Fulani herdsmen lost their lives. Right now, they have condemned five Christians to be hanged.

“They did it so expeditiously that I have never seen a case of that matter being handled within a few months and concluded, while the communities in Numa and surrounding communities where people were killed and farms destroyed, nobody has been arrested for what they have done.

“We are just being pushed to the  wall. That is why we stand by the steps being taken by Taraba and Benue state governments to enact laws that will help them secure the lives of people in their communities.”

Furthermore, he stressed: “We will keep on praying as Christian leaders. We will encourage our Christian brethren, across the country, to continually pray for us.

“But, we want President Muhammadu Buhari to take steps to mitigate this virus, because there is no way we can exchange the lives of human beings for the lives of cows.

“And I think it is necessary for the law enforcement agencies to do their work. And if they said herdsmen are carrying sticks as president had said, let them find out who these killer people are.”

“The fact that they are getting away with it means that they are colluding with those who are killing people, and until something is done positively to remedy the situation, I think that the future does not look so bright.

“So, we want to appeal to our brethren to keep praying and appeal to our youths to keep calm, while the Christians elders and leaders with the communities leaders should work harder and make sure that our communities are secured. The military and government of President Muhammadu Buhari should do what they ought to do.

“When we are pushed to the wall, I don’t think self defence is bad. But, the Lord did not command us to carry weapon to fight anybody. As far as we are concerned, communities should have their own vigilante and safeguard themselves, because if you are coming to kill me, I will not wait until you Kill me.”
