Ekiti APC Governorship Primaries: Aspirants Insist Poll Must Be Credible

The All Progressive Congress (APC) has postponed its governorship primary which was scheduled to take place in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Thursday.

The primary will now take place on Friday, July 20, while a meeting between the Primary Election Committee chaired by the Governor of Zamfara State and stakeholders of the party will take place on Thursday.

Confirming the postponement on Wednesday, the chairman of the APC in Osun State, Gboyega Famoodun, said the move was “due to unforeseen developments”.

Seventeen aspirants have been cleared by the national leadership of the party to participate in the governorship primary.

The APC plans to use the direct primary to elect its flag bearer for the governorship election, which is scheduled to take place on September 22, 2018.

National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, announced the plan after a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee in Abuja on Monday.

He explained that the method was more democratic and would ensure that APC members took ownership of the party.

According to him, allowing just a few delegates to choose candidates encourages corruption.

Oshiomhole is confident that each of the 17 aspirants who obtained nomination forms and were cleared for the primary is capable of governing the state.

“We are impressed that the 17 of them are competent enough to effectively govern the state and that we do not lack competent hands to provide leadership in Osun State after the exit of Rauf Aregbesola,” he said.
