With the aim of achieving educational excellence and alleviating poverty in Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation known as Yattiyr Scholarship Initiative has awarded scholarships to some public school students in Ilorin, Kwara state, to mark the first phase of their scholarship programme.

The scholarship event, which took place at the Community Grammar School, Oke-Ose, Ilorin, where students were given a short test to determine their motivational drive and aspirations in life, saw five students emerged winners of the contest and were however awarded scholarships.

According to the presiding officer, Yattiyr Scholarship Initiative, Mr Fatoye John, said the five outstanding students: Alao Muyideen, Magaji Zainab, Abdulrafiu Sherifat, Aruna Muyibi and Yunus Majeed, who are all in Senior Secondary Classes, have been awarded a scholarship that would cover their education throughout their secondary school education.

He further said that the students have been charged to work harder in passing their examinations, so as not to allow the initiative to terminate the scholarships given to them.

Mr John also said that the aim of the scholarships awarded to the students is to expunge poverty that is militating against academic pursuit in the state and in Nigeria as a whole.

“After we had given them the short test and when we went back there the following day to announce the winners; one of the best students we awarded the scholarship was already sent home for not paying his school fees, we had to send for him from home while we settle his school fees. Can you see how poverty is forcing some students out of school,” he said.

The initiative had earlier embarked on several other projects like free books distributions to students and various educational seminars in various schools in the city of Ilorin.

The convener also said they are not just giving scholarships, but also embarking on various educational projects to enhance literacy and improve reading culture among the school children.
