The proposed Tribune office in Lagos

The oldest surviving Nigeria’s news medium, the African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN) PLC, publishers of Tribune titles, Nigerian Tribune, Saturday Tribune, Sunday Tribune and Tribune Online (www.tribuneonlineng.com), clocks 69 today.

This year’s anniversary is being celebrated in a unique way with the foundation laying ceremony of the permanent Lagos office of ANN PLC, another grand achievement for Nigeria’s leading news platform.

Established November 16, 1949, by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a Pan-Africanist and former Premier of the old Nigeria’s Western Region government, Nigerian Tribune is an independent media operating in Nigeria, and over the past six decades, the newspaper has evolved to be the top in competitive Nigeria’s news media business.

The online platform, Tribune Online, is well known for tradition of breaking news and has over the years, built a reputation for being Nigeria’s most informative online news medium, publishing general interests articles, organised in areas which include Politics, Business, Sports, Entertainment, Tourism, Op-Ed and others, for ease of navigation.

In 2014, Tribune Online won an award for the website with richest contents, while over the years, it has won the best editorial of the year award, since ANN PLC news media provide an independent perspective with a commitment to the credible dissemination of editorial information.

Earlier in its formative years, during Nigeria’s First Republic, Nigerian Tribune was used as a political organ of the then Action Group (AG), as a platform to project the populist agenda of its founder, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, popularly called Awo. The newspaper later grew to become a training ground for journalists who wanted to sharpen their skills.

Before the newspaper relocated its corporate headquarter to Oke-Ado area of Ibadan, where it currently operates from, it started out printing at Adeoyo road in Ibadan. During its foundation, the Tribune joined others in exhibiting nationalist thoughts and became known as a major critic of the central government earning it respect among the followers of the founder.
