JOHESU may suspend nationwide industrial action

There are strong indications that the ongoing nationwide industrial action embarked on by paramedical health workers would be suspended.

The leadership of the five unions under the aegis of Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) led by Josiah Biobelemoye is expected to hold emergency meeting with the National Executive Council of various unions to brief the on the outcome of the conciliatory meeting held at the instance of Senate President, Bukola Saraki after Wednesday plenary.

Speaking on the outcome of the meeting held at the conference room of the Senate President, Biobelemoye explained that the meeting was positive adding that the decision to either suspend the strike or not would be determined at the meeting with other Unions.

They are: Medical & Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwifes (NANNM), Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professional, Senior Staff Association of University Teaching Hospital Research Institutes and Associated Institutions.

Meanwhile, the National Industrial Court has resolved to set up an arbitration panel to intervene in the lingering crisis between the health workers and Federal Government.

This was necessitated by the accusation that Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment and his counterpart, Isaac Adewole, Minister of Health have compromised in the ongoing negotiations.

Series of conciliatory meetings held at the instance of the Minister of Labour and Employment were deadlock as the workers stormed out of the meetings, signaling the rejection of offers made by the Federal Government negotiation team.

The coalition of health unions had on the 17th April, 2018 directed all its members to withdraw of health services by the striking health workers has paralyzed activities in all the federal health institutions.
