Muslim group warns against do-or-die politics, prays for peaceful elections
By A religious group, Nadwat-ul-ahli Islamic Society of Nigeria (NADWAT) in Ilorin, Kwara State, has urged political leaders and their supporters to avoid do-or-die politics in the interest of peace and stability of Nigeria.
The Chief Missioner of the group, Ustaz Aliyu Olayinka, gave the warning after a special prayer organised to ensure peaceful conduct of the 2019 elections in Kwara State in particular and Nigeria in general.
About 3,000 members of the organisation participated in the prayer session tagged “One Million Salawat/Special Prayers.”
Speaking after the prayer session during which several portions of the Holy Qur’an were recited, Ustaz Olayinka said the prayer was organised as part of the organisation’s contributions to the peace and progress of the country.
While cautioning politicians against making the coming elections a do-or-die affair, the cleric reminded them that only God gives power and to whom He likes.
According to him, no meaningful development could be attained in an atmosphere of chaos and acrimony and as such, politicians should ensure trouble-free campaigns and elections.
He advised political officeholders to see their positions as a means to serve God and humanity rather than an avenue to acquire wealth illegally.
“We organised this one million Salawat to seek blessings for Prophet Muhammad, pray for ourselves and pray for God’s mercy in Kwara State and Nigeria at large so that we can have peaceful elections,” he said.
The head of the women’s wing of NADWAT, Hajiya Rafat Ajelanwa, warned youths against being used as instruments of destruction before, during and after the general election.
She also enjoined parents, particularly mothers, to monitor the activities of their children so that they would not be misled by unscrupulous politicians.
Members of the NADWAT from across the 16 local government areas of the state attended the prayer.
