MR John Gabaya, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship candidate for Bwari Area Council (FCT), has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure transparency in the March 9 council election.

Gabaya made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja, while on his campaign tour of Bwari town.

NAN reports that INEC is to hold the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election along with the Governorship and State Assembly elections on Saturday.

Gabaya, who praised both INEC and security agencies for their roles in the success of the Presidential and National Assembly elections of Feb 23, urged them to do more.

He said that it would be to their credit if the March 9 elections in the council were to be as peaceful and transparent as the presidential and national assembly elections.

He underscored the need for the votes of the people in the council to count.

“The issue of rigging in elections cannot move us forward in this council.

“The people should be allowed to choose in peace, who they wish to lead them.

“Rigging and fighting cannot solve our problems in this country, neither can it solve the problems of the Bwari Area Council; transparency is key in this process.

“We thank INEC and all security agents for the transparent conduct of previous elections in this council particularly.

“It was without any intimidation; they did well, but we want them to put more effort in the forthcoming FCT council poll also.

“This is so that the people’s hope and trust in the entire democratic system are not dashed, but sustained,” he said.

Speaking on his plans for the council if elected, Gabaya said that he would ensure the progress and development of the council in all areas.

He, however, said that his administration would focus more attention on the development of infrastructure and provision of social amenities in communities within the council.

“I have used my personal money, before now, to repair roads within communities that needed access to major areas of the town and beyond.

“What is more, if I am elected to be the chairman of this council, I will do more because I have good development plans for this council and I will dedicate myself towards ensuring that this council becomes the best in FCT,” he added.
