The Federal Government has tasked oil companies operating in the Niger Delta on the implementation of national oil spill contingency plan.

Director-General, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Mr. Musa Idris, gave the charge while speaking in Abuja.

He decried the challenge of water pollution and environmental degradation in the oil producing communities in the Niger Delta, saying the government was committed towards ameliorating the plight of the people in the region.

What next for Saraki in Kwara?

While stressing that the Federal Government was committed to the clean up of Ogoni land, Idris, said, “we saw and classified the impact on Ogoni land into three; the areas that are heavily impacted, the areas that are not heavily impacted and the areas that have not been captured.

He explained that the difference between the heavy and less impacted lied with the ground water pollution which was called category ‹A› pollution and cost more than just degrading the soil.

He said the agency was going to focus on empowering the zonal offices,  noting that the national oil spill contingency plan and response agency would succeed if more attention was  paid to the zonal offices.

He said in other for the organisation to move forward,  all the staff of the office, especially the senior staff and directors, must know the importance of punctuality and leave by example for others to emulate.
