FG inaugurates road, gully erosion projects in Abuja

The Federal Government has inaugurated integrated waste management facility, gully erosion control and road improvement works in Kurudu faze I & II in the outskirts of Abuja city.

The projects which were executed in Kurudu (phase1) and Army  Post Service Estate phase 5 road, (phase 2) Kurudu, Abuja Municipal Area Council were implemented as a matter of urgent attention to safeguard the lives, health, and property of the residents of the areas.

The  Minister of Communications, Dr. Adebayo Shittu who inaugurated the  projects for public use, in a ceremony, tagged ‘’Commissioning and Handing over of the projects” disclosed that the projects are among  the  federal  government ecological intervention for  the  4th quarter of 2017 and  2nd  quarter 2018 which were awarded by the Federal Executive Council and approved by President  Muhammadu Buhari.

According to Dr. Shittu, the projects were executed to check flooding,  gully erosion menace and improve environmental hygiene and wellbeing of the inhabitants of the estate and its environs.

The  Minister further stated that the execution of these laudable projects testify to the sincerity of the current administration’s promises that no part of the country shall suffer neglect due to geographical or political considerations.

In her address at the ceremony, the Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund  Office, Dr. Habiba  Lawal said  the  projects were initiated through a request for urgent  intervention forwarded to the  Ecological Fund  Office (EFO) by the  chairman of AMAC and Army  Post Service Housing  Resident Association in order to arrest the continuous erosion menace, improve the access road as well as remove the gullible heaps of solid waste that caused serious discomfort for the inhabitant of the area.

Dr. Habiba attributed the timely execution of the projects to the relentless commitments of the projects’ contractor and the consultant who worked tirelessly to ensure minimum loss of time in the implementation schedule and complemented by close monitoring and prompt honoring of all contractual obligation by the  EFO.

She  noted that the  commissioning and  handing  over of  the  projects  to the management of  the  estate aims to achieve dual purposes of enabling the estate to take ownership of the  projects to ensure its maintenance and  sustainability.

She warned them not to allow the huge resources committed to the execution of the projects to be wasteful, urging  AMAC to use the dump site for development activity to prevent further dumping of waste.

Earlier, the Director, Army  Post  Service  Housing,  Major  General Bashir  Mahe hailed the  Federal Government for delivering on the projects, explaining that it has been a long-awaited project for the residents and this current development has brought a sigh of relief for them.

He noted that the completion of the projects has increased the influx of people to the community and urged the government to continue to meet the needs of the people in the country.
