Human trafficking

A human rights activist, Erelu Toyin Mark, on Thursday, raised the alarm over the increasing rate of human trafficking in Nigeria, saying it has become a modern slave trade that must be checked in the country.

She lamented that Nigeria has now become a source, transit and destination country for women and children subjected to trafficking in persons including forced labour, forced prostitution, domestic servitude and sexual exploitation.

Toyin Mark, who is the President and Founder of Erelu Eyinade Foundation (EEF), made this known in Abuja, while staging a walk to end human trafficking and abuse, especially on the girl-child and child labour in the country.

According to her, the campaign is aimed at ending human trafficking and making the victims better for themselves and the society at large.

“The Erelu Eyinade Foundation (EEF) has shouldered the responsibility with the support of well-meaning Nigerians and other Non-Governmental Organisation (NGOs) to fight and campaign against human trafficking which has become a social problem in our society.

“And this battle can’t be fought alone, we can’t leave it for our government to fight this battle alone, so it needs our collective efforts to eradicate human trafficking out of our system completely,” She stated.

She noted that human trafficking which debased the victim and ridicules the society is a sin against humanity, calling on all Nigerians to collectively fight against the scourge, as there were no greener pastures abroad as claimed by the traffickers.

Also speaking, the foundation’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Mrs Kehinde Okoroafor noted that major cause of trafficking in Nigeria was poverty and as such, the foundation was poised at giving voice to the voiceless, especially the vulnerable.

She stated that there was no greener pasture elsewhere except in one’s own country, saying “if you know what you are doing here in Nigeria, you can make it here also, She advised.
