Ogun to adopt global standard in waste management

Ogun

THE Ogun State Government said it would adopt global best practices in waste management for a cleaner environment.

This was stated by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mrs Yetunde Dina, during the presentation of the final Feasibility Study Report on the State Waste Management Project, sponsored by the Agence Francaise De Development (AFD, at her office, recently.

Dina said the conduct of the study, which was to be funded by AFD, would require commitment from both parties, to ensure the project takes off on solid foundation, considering its importance to the State.

She said the amount of waste being generated in the State, as well as the challenges of their proper management,  were enormous, noting that such a task requires collaboration and support of foreign partners to address.

While assuring that Government would study the report and take necessary actions, the Permanent Secretary declared that dump sites located within build-up settlements would be relocated to prevent an epidemic.

According to her, new trends in waste management goes beyond carting and dumping of waste, as such can no longer be regarded as unwanted materials, rather, raw materials and sources of wealth.

Speaking the Project Manager, Miss Karine Escande said the Project would increase waste collection rate, improve the solid waste management to international standard and conversion of waste to energy.

She enumerated benefits that would be accrued to include, the improved environmental and social standard of existing recycling industries, development and implementation of State policy for the use of organic fertilizers and setting up tools for implementation and enforcement of State environment bye-laws, amongst others.
