At synod, Anglican diocese frowns on increasing cases of killings

The Diocese of Irele/Ese-Odo, Anglican Communion, under the leadership of the Right Reverend Joshua Sunday Oyinlola has joined other Christian bodies to condemn the level of insecurity in the country, just as it urged the Federal Government to find lasting solutions to insecurity in Nigeria now.

The church, at its third session of the first synod held recently at Cathedral of St. Andrew’s, Ode-Irele, Ondo State, condemned rising cases of banditry, kidnapping, rape, armed robbery, ritual killings, political thurgery, among other vices.

The synod with the theme: Arise and Let Us Build Together, also expressed displeasure over the state of the economy, adding that it has brought untold hardship to the citizens, as it has led to incessant reports of depression and suicide in the country.

The synod advised the federal and state governments to fast track the implementation of the minimum wage to cushion the effect of the economy on Nigerians, just as the judiciary was advised to always remain the last hope of the masses by dispensing justice without fear or favour.

The church also admonished the federal and state governments to act fast on the measures and implementations that can lead to the resuscitation of social amenities such as roads, electricity, and equipping hospitals for better healthcare delivery.

In the communiqué signed by the, Secretary Communiqué, Mr Dele Awe; Dean of the Cathedral, Venerable Jeje Bamidele and the Bishop of Irele/Ese-Odo, Anglican Communion, Right Reverend Joshua Sunday Oyinlola, stated that the federal and state governments should to declare a state of emergency on the country’s educational system.

The diocese also condemned the participation of President Mohammadu Buhari at the recently-held Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) meeting in Saudi Arabia.

Also, the Mothers’ Union of the Ibadan North Anglican Diocese in Oyo State has described the state of insecurity as disturbing, just as it has called on the Federal Government to handle the level of insecurity with the seriousness that it deserves.

This was part of the resolutions reached after the conclusion of the 21st Annual Mothers’ Union conference held between June 13 and 16 at the Victoria Memorial Anglican Church, Olorunsogo, Ibadan.

In a communiqué signed by the Diocesan Mothers’ Union president, Mrs J. T. Okubadejo, the union stated that “it appears that the mode of insecurity in Nigeria has changed and has become more brutal than before. Citizens are now being kidnapped in daylight for ritual purposes or ransom, this has not excluded the elite in the society. This is posing serious danger to our economy and existence as a nation.

“Therefore the current unstable state of the nation is a source of concern, and we as mothers implore the government to handle the matters of insecurity, armed banditry, corruption in low and high places, kidnapping, insurgency, terrorist attacks, Fulani herdsmen/farmers’ clashes and many more with all the seriousness they deserve. All these have led to wastage in the nation in terms of loss of human lives, properties and economic related matters in the development of the nation.”

The forum also called on relevant authorities to arrest the tide of human trafficking with the provision of a conducive environment for youths to maximise their potential.
