OAU student commits suicide for failing exams

Tragedy struck at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife,  Osun State, on Friday, when a student of the institution identified as Opeyemi Grace Dara committed suicide.

Sunday Tribune gathered that the student, who was in the Department of English, died after allegedly taking a substance suspected to be sniper.

Though details of the incident were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, Sunday Tribune was informed that she committed suicide as a result of her poor academic performance, allegedly having carryover in some courses.

A source in the institution told Sunday Tribune: “A student in the Department of English at OAU in Ile- Ife, Opeyemi Grace Dara, whose set finished their final year exams last semester has committed suicide by taking sniper.”

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, confirmed the incident, adding that the institution would investigate the incident and make its findings public.

Olanrewaju said: “We sympathise with the parents of the deceased called Dara. We just want our students and young ones to know that depression is not a thing they should encourage no matter the situation or circumstance they find themselves.

“We want to appeal to students, particularly OAU students, to take things easy. Any child that fails can rerun the course, you can resit a course. Failure or repetition of a course or particular subject is also part of the challenges students must face.”
