JUST IN: FCAH&PT students protest incessant attacks by cultists, disrupt traffic flow in Ibadan

Students of Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Moor Plantation, Apata, Ibadan, on Friday disrupted free flow of traffic for many hours at the Moor Plantation end of the Abeokuta/Ibadan road as they blocked the road which resulted into stoppage of human and vehicular movement while protesting what they described as incessant attack on them by suspected cultists on campus.

The representatives of the the students who spoke with Tribune Online said that it has been a usual practice for cultists to harass them persistently without being challenged by security operatives who are saddled with the responsibility of maintaining law and order on campus.

They further informed that some of the nefarious acts been perpetrated by these suspected cultists include robbing of students of their personal belongings such as mobile phones, money, foodstuffs and some other valuables.

The students lamented that despite numerous written and verbal complaints, the school management is yet to address the issue. They claimed that all of them are living in the hostel with fear of being attacked by cultists.

They told Tribune Online that the reason they protested on the road on Friday was because of the attack on their colleague, a National Diploma 2 students in the Department of Fisheries,  Babatunde Ademola Abulazeez, who was accosted by suspected cultist on Thursday, demanding money and when he refused, he was knifed on the cheek.

Abulazeez, was, however, rushed to the hospital with the use of a motorcycle as the ambulance in the school was nonfunctional.

The students, therefore, demanded that security personnel should be on patrol on the school premises 24/7 as well as the neighbouring communities where “these cultists use as hideout,” saying this could only guarantee their safety at all time, while also demanding those involved in the act should be apprehended and made to face the consequences of their actions.

It, however, took the intervention of men of the Operation Burst, a special security outfit put together by the Oyo State government, the police, the DSS and other security agencies to restore normalcy in the area.

The security team assured the students of their safety while urging them to go back to their classes with a promise to have a dialogue with the school authority to fashion out ways of providing adequate security on campus.
