My life as house help to a music star — Miidi

Miidi

Though he may be young, he had experienced several challenges as a teenager. Fast-rising Hip Hop artiste, Odeyemi Olamide Martin, popularly known as Miidi, who is now 18 is on top of his game in the music industry as he assured of a bright career. In this interview by SEYI SOKOYA, he speaks about life and his vision in the industry.

What is you growing up like?

I was born in Lagos State, Nigeria, but had my primary and secondary school education in Ibadan, Oyo State. I could be seen as young, but I have gone through a lot of things in life. However, I am not dejected, because I know that my future is bright.

How did you discover your passion for music?

My parents made me to fall in love with music, because they were ardent music lovers. Their love for music influenced me and I developed interest in it. By that time I was 11 years old and I joined a church choir in Ibadan. I started performing at the age of 13. I started music professionally while in secondary school. Having picked interest in music; I developed myself by going to studio, and went through some rudiments of music. I eventually released my first single entitled: “Murder”, which was produced by Mockbeatz. After the release of the first single, I went for the auditioning of the MTN Project Fame in 2017.

My passion for music was high when I was 15. I derive unlimited joy and it has served as a saving grace for me. This spurred me to drop my second song entitled: “Finally”, produced by Singzbeatz. The work really enjoyed massive airplay and made me win many competitions in radio stations including Beatz FM, Jamz FM, Oluyole FM, Raypower, Diamond FM, Inspiration FM, Naija FM, Lead Radio, Splash FM.

How have you been able to carve a niche for yourself in the industry?

Things may be though or hard to get as an up-and-coming artiste, but I am full of confidence that my time is near. I have not come to the industry to joke or wander around. It is my passion and I am dared to excel with music. It is strict business for me, so the entertainment or fun cannot overshadow me. I have a new work which is currently making wave in the industry it is entitled: “Amin”. This new work is dedicated to my fans, especially for their support and for believing in me. These two things have been what have been keeping me strong most.

How do you see yourself among your peers and the A-list in the industry?

I am working hard to get to the top and also remain at the top. So, my best is yet to come. I am not moved by challenges that come my way now. I am focused and I see all what I am going through now as a phase that will pass soonest. In fact, these are dues I have to pay in the industry, so it is normal. I have everything it takes to be recognised as best rated artiste.

How has life been treating you as a young artiste?

For a fact, I have been grinding all my life. I lived with friends, slept on bare floor, got kicked out by a family. I lived with uncles and aunties, who only saw the need to use me as a maid (Omo odo).

I would be the first to wake up and the last to sleep. I have been through the good and the bad, rise to the fall. I have experienced the world of the rich and the poor. There is a spirit of a hustler in me that keeps me going. I have experienced betrayal and cheat. I have been through different phases of life where snakes in human form were all that were around me and I was blind to see. Even though I’m not where I envisioned to be I’m not where I used to be. I’m a moving train and my journey hasn’t ended; it has just started. I want people to watch out as I rise through the ladder of the industry.

Are your parents aware of all you have been through?

Yes, I am sure that it is not their wish to see their son suffer without doing something about it. Life was not miserable before the death of my daddy. After his demise years back in Ibadan, things became tough for us. We had to relocate to Lagos. We stayed with our grandma for a while. The apartment was small that it cannot contain us. So, I was asked to leave with my relatives. As I said earlier, the experience was horrible. I had several unfulfilled promises from them, but I thank God I survived it. I am more matured now; I am 18 and I see that as a phase of life. I have moved on and it has turned to history now. I take no offence with such experience because it made me strong and brave when faced with any challenge in life. I have discovered my talent and I am making steady success in the industry.

What have you been doing lately?

I have been working on several projects that I will be putting out soon. I’ve worked with Lussh Beatz, Blaise Beatz, Antras, Craybeatz, Chilly Ace, Ikon, Drey stick and still got more to come.

Who is your role model?

In Nigeria, Wizkid is my role model and I would love to work with him. Also on the international level, I respect and love Chris Brown and Drake.

What is your vision of the entertainment industry?

I see the entertainment industry growing bigger and better beyond what it is now. The pioneers have taken up the industry to a higher level and also put a lot of effort, in making the industry big and so it is left for us the younger generation to sustain the legacy and ensure we push the industry to a greater level. I want to be part of those that would be referred to as one of the accomplishment, of this great vision. It is my dream to become a very crucial member of this industry with great influence. I am seeing music and the industry at large from a different perspective. Not about the jamboree, but fulfilling my dream and making a positive impact.
