6.6 million registered employees under NSITF ― Official

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) on Thursday said that over 6.6 million Nigerian employees are registered with the scheme, just as over 100,000 employers have fully registered with them as well.
Chris Esedebe, the Deputy General Manager, Claims and Compensation department of the NSITF, disclosed this at the stakeholder awareness forum on the employees’ compensation scheme that took place at Jogor Centre, Ibadan, on Thursday.
“Since the implementation of the scheme in 2011 till the last time we did the counting in July, 2019, we have over 6.6 million registered users with us already.
“Although, employers are coming to register with us on a daily basis but during the last count, we realised we had over 100,000 registered employers of labour with us already,” he said.
Esedebe, who reiterated the need for all employers of labour to register with the scheme said that the benefits they stand to gain is second to none.
“Although, it is mandatory by law, the Employees’ Compensation Act, 2010 made it compulsory for all employers of labour, except the Nigerian armed forces to register with the scheme but for social security and adequate welfare of workers, it is imperative for them to register with us,” he stated.
He also said that the scheme has paid out not less than N6.6 billon to employees for different contingencies since the inauguration of the scheme eight years ago.
Earlier in her remarks, Mrs Temitope Akinwale, the Regional Manager, Ibadan NSITF said the awareness forum was taking place in order for the scheme to enlighten the public of the benefits they tend to enjoy for keying into the scheme.
“We are gathered here as part of our continuous duty as the managers of this noble scheme on behalf of our stakeholders and the society at large, to educate and enlighten the public on the benefits of keying into this scheme,” she said.
