Man arrested for beating wife to death in Ogun

Ogun

OPERATIVES of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 28-year-old man, Kazeem Yusuf, for allegedly beating his 26-year-old wife to death.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune, the suspect, who had been on the run since September 23 when the incident occurred, was apprehended on October 14 by policemen attached to Enugada divisional headquarters.

Oyeyemi said on September 23, the suspect went to the police station to report that his wife collapsed while going to fetch water and died.

The PPRO said: “Upon his report, the DPO of Enugada Division, SP Baba Hamzat, detailed his detectives to the scene, but on close observation of the woman’s body, they noticed marks of violence on it, which aroused their suspicion that the victim might not have died of natural causes.

“While the detectives were searching for more evidences, the suspect sneaked out and took to his heels. The body of the woman was subsequently taken to the mortuary of the General Hospital, Ijaiye, while massive manhunt was launched for the husband.

“The manhunt yielded a positive result on October 14 when his hideout at Itori was discovered, where he was promptly arrested.

“The suspect has since made a confessional statement that he beat up his wife over a minor disagreement and that she collapsed in the process and gave up the ghost. He further stated that it was not the first time he would be beating the woman, but didn’t know that the beating would lead to her death.”

The body of the deceased, a mother of one, has since been buried by her relations according to Islamic rites.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, has ordered the transfer of the suspect to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigation and prosecution.
