A non-governmental organisation, School Mum has charged the girl-child to see herself as equal to the male child.

The founder, School Mum, Miss Shola Adewunmi made this known at the celebration of The International Girl Child Day, held at the Herbert Macaulay Senior Secondary School in Lagos.

Shola noted that seeing themselves as equal does not mean they are better than the male child.

“I am charging the girls to prove to the world and to themselves that they are equal to the male child.

“I am not telling them that they are better because we are all human beings regardless of our gender.

“It is what we have in our head that determines how great we will be.

Adewunmi explained the imperativeness of the day as motivation and celebration of the girl child, equipping them with self development skills to transforming from princesses to queens.

“We are here today because we are celebrating the Girl Child International Day and we are here to motivate and celebrate the girls.

“It is important to celebrate this Day because they are the light of the world. We are here to show them that we are rooting for them.

“We want to invest in them in order to make them better future leaders.

“I told them they are all princesses and I equip them with the self-development skills to transform them from princesses to queens and that they should start doing that today through dedication, hard work, focus, consistency and persistency,” Adewunmi said.

While explaining the rationale behind the organisation, Adewunmi described her experience as divine as the need to motivate and empower the girl child is of utmost importance to her.

“This is a divine calling for me. I have been doing this for the past seven years now. I feel that these students need motivation and empowerment.

“Just to continue to tell them that they should continue with the positive energy exerted towards their academics and assure them that the consequent reward is always awesome.

“That is exactly why School Mum came up to be able to say that I am behind you in the face of any troubled waters.

“If you are academically or psychologically challenged, let me tell you how to get out of it as our motto says we are guarding light and nurturing hands” Shola said.

Meanwhile, some of the students, during the presentation on various sub-topics on how a Nigerian girl should be unstoppable, said that she should have self-respect and high esteem

They advised that discrimination should not be allowed, regardless of gender.
