Edo 2020: EU/INEC partner on credible election
By As the September 19 governorship election approaches in Edo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in partnership with European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES), on Thursday organised a capacity building workshop for Electoral Officers (EOs) across the 18 local government areas.
The workshop with the theme, “INEC Edo State Election Monitoring and Support Centre (EMSC), Red Zone Implementer’s Workshop was geared towards achieving credible governorship election in the state.
In his welcome address, Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Johnson Alalibo, said the workshop was to appraise the level of preparedness for the September 19 governorship election.
Alalibo said the essence of the workshop was to ensure free, fair, peaceful and credible election.
“We want to know the areas we have covered in the preparation for the September 19, governorship election and geared up in the areas we are lagging,”he said.
Earlier, Sylvestre Somo, ECES Senior Project officer said the workshop will enhance the operational and logistics efficiency of the commission toward the conduct of governorship election in Edo state.
Somo, added that the workshop is targeted at familiarizing key electoral staff of Edo INEC with the structure and operational frame work of the EMSC.
He however, commended the European Union for its consistency in funding of ECES in Nigeria and other parts of the world.
He explained that the ECES is implementing the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) program.
