schoolIn order to arrest the decay in the education sector in Oyo state, the government designed a holistic approach that will involve all stakeholders; the school Governing Board, Parent Teachers associations, school alumnus and the Education Trust Fund among others to improve the education system in the state and create a good learning environment for the students in different secondary schools.

The consensus among stakeholders is that education at all levels is too big to be left for the government alone to handle and diverse interested bodies and associations have been contributing to ensure that the government’s vision of a vibrant educational sector that will produce excellence is achieved.

One of such interventions is recently by the 83/88 Old Girls of St. Teresa College, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, who saw that there was increasing deficiency in home management and cooking skills among young school leavers and decided to strengthen the Home Economics department of the school by donating renovating the home economics laboratory and equipping it with state of the art apparatus.

The presentation of the multi-million naira worth donation to their Alma Mata is part of their contributions to ensuring that the standard of the school remains top notch and that the students have the required materials to learn in a comfortable environment thereby recreating the kind of environment that they met in the school as students.

The handover which was held at the school hall on Saturday was done in commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of their graduation from the school and was part of efforts to give back to the institution that has molded them and also to sow a seed in the lives of the young school girls to get the best and become better ladies.

The Old students who are called Old Teresans handed over the renovated home economics laboratory to the school management with a promise that they will continue to give back to the school which played a huge role in their lives and helped them to become what they are today individually.

Speaking at the commissioning and handover, the National President of the alumni association, Chief (Mrs) Ranti Koiki described the gestures as good and welcoming development that has helped to bridge the gap between where the school was and where it should be and commended the donor set for remembering the school of their youth. She also appealed to others who are yet to give any support to the school to do so in the interest of young girls that are in the school and in appreciation of what they school imparted in them.

“It is a good tiding and we thank God that we keep coming back to give back. It is marvelous in our eyes and we praise God. Coming back on regular basis is not a mistake I just want to thank God for being part of this progressive movement. Although, we have done lot of things, we still have a lot of projects to commission. In another two weeks, we should come back to commission the chemistry laboratory and we are going to complete the fence reconstruction, aesthetic and other projects.

“We are tapping from the wealth of resources of our alumni and we have done so much in the last five years. The whole environment is looking good and many people think the school is a private school, but it is not. It is just that we care and we keep coming back to give. We have fixed the chemistry lab, physics lab, biology lab, doors, staff room, chairs, classes, ICT labs and very soon we will commission the e-library,” she said.

Also speaking, the President, 83/89 set, Mrs Olufunmilola Ajayi, justifying the choice of the home economics lab said, “I know that we have a lot of projects here to do, we are just doing it one after the other. When we first got here, we noticed that this place is closer to the frontage and entrance of the school. Other parts are looking good but this place is worse and kind of dilapidated. We also found that a lot of our girls no longer have the required skills in the home and kitchen management, yet it is an essential part of their studies,” she said.

The Chairperson of the STC Governing Board, Prof Adenike Emeke, a professor of Educational Evaluation and Counseling psychology, University of Ibadan, appealed to the government to imbibe the culture of encouraging the old students by writing and acknowledging their donations and contributions, pointing out that such recognition will boost the morale of the old students to do more and give them a better sense of commitment and recognition as a partner and important stakeholder.

She added that if the tempo of donations and giving back to the school by the old students continues the vision of bringing back the glory of old days to schools in Oyo state will be easier to achieve.
