I was recently placed on Prednisone tablets for my skin ailment but was surprised to later discover that the drug was giving me some problems. The first thing I noticed was that my skin was getting lighter while my abdomen and face started swelling up while I ended up gaining weight. I want to know if this is normal and what to do about it. Prednisone is a drug that is commonly used to treat many inflammatory conditions including skin diseases. The chief barrier to use of prednisone is its long list of potential side effects, many of which are visible or especially bothersome. Therefore, your observation is normal and is part of the side effects of Prednisone.

Taking your dose of prednisone earlier in the day (only on the advice of a physician!) could reduce side effects such as insomnia or night sweats and taking it with meals could prevent stomach upset. Reducing salt intake can prevent side effects associated with fluid retention just as you are currently observing. Watching fat and calorie intake can help to prevent weight gain associated with steroids. In addition, having a consultation with a nutritionist will be helpful in planning a diet to follow while taking prednisone.
