automotiveThe automotive industry is an important segment of the global economy, and it is both capital and labour-intensive. Most people like to avoid automotive issues due to the fact that they cannot fathom all the wirings, connections and parts they see whenever they open the hood of their cars. Though a seemingly complex sector, an auto-mechanic derives pleasure from understanding these wires, belts and parts which help them decipher the engine system, diagnose the problem when there is an issue.

Needless to say, times have changed, we are now in a highly competitive market and to survive, everyone needs a vocational skill. This swift change in times birthed this decision to provide a fun introduction to the exciting world of auto-mechanics. Our goal is to train and educate teenagers in basic automotive repair skills, its maintenance and care through theoretical knowledge, hands-on applications from introduction and overview, fuel, ignition, suspension and electrical system to diesel, basic troubleshooting and life management skills.

automotiveAfter a successful first edition which took place in 2017, we recently concluded the second edition, themed ‘Equipping a new generation’. The two-week long training was exclusively practical, the teenagers learned how to inspect, repair and maintain vehicles. They had various automotive classes, ranging from workshop and workshop safety to vehicle diagnosis and repairs with a weekly assessment to ascertain a comprehensive knowledge. Enrolling the kids for the training, by their parents and guardians, was an excellent way of making them learn the language of auto mechanics and provide them with wider career options.

The training took place from Monday 6th August – Friday 17th August 2018. During the closing ceremony, the participants were able to display their automotive skills to the admiration of their parents and well-wishers. Each participant worked on separate vehicles for services such as oil filter and engine oil change, vehicle cleaning detailing, routine check and inspection. The event was brought to an end by issuing certificates to the participants, presenting them with gifts and a call for sponsorship to further enable this project.
