AMVCA 2018 witnesses continent-wide representation

The 2018 African Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) has doubled the healthy rivalry among film industries across Africa with the recognition of the efforts and creativity of talents, producers, directors, technical crew among others.
Now in its 6th edition, the awards, which held at Eko Hotel ad Suites Lagos on Saturday September 2 2018 saw industry stakeholders receiving awards in 27 categories drawn from over 120 nominations across the continent.
The wider representation of the awards this year was obvious as ’18 Hours’, directed by Kenya’s Phoebe  Ruguru, winning the Overall Best Movie 2018, which was won in 2017 by ’76’, a movie directed by Nigeria’s Izu Ojukwu.
Besides wining the Overall Best Movie, ’18 Hours’ won Best Movie in East Africaand Best Picture Editor by its Mark Maina.
Nyce Wanueri, another Kenyan, won Best Actress in a Drama with her role in Auntie Boss, while Adjetey Anang,  a Ghanaian actor, won the Best Actor in a drama or TV series for his role in the movie, Keteke.
However, while Nigerian movies failed to win the Overall Movie, a few won in other categories.
Folarin Falana (Falz) won the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Movie/TV Series’, Bisola Aiyeola, won the Trail Blazer award, while Tinde Kelan, a veteran cinematographer, won the Industry Merit Award. As well, Omotal Ekeinde won her first AMVCA awards this year.
Speaking at the awards, Africa Maggic, the organisers, noted that 18 Hour deserved the recognition as Phoebe Ruguru was recognised for telling an authentically African story.
