WHO puts measures in place to curtail Ebola soread into Nigeria

The World  Health  Organisation (WHO) has already put measures in place to curtail the spread of Ebola from Congo to Nigeria.
The WHO country Director,  Wondi  Alemu made the disclosure at the health for all walk in Abuja said they are partnering with the Federal Government to curtail the spread from Congo.
According to him,  though there is  risk that Ebola might resurface again in Nigeria, there is
enough mechanism put in place to curtail the effect.

“We are collaborating with  the Federal Ministry of health , and  the National Centre for disease control, to ensure necessary  precaution are made to prevent Ebola in the country.
Speaking further, Alemu urged all Nigerians to take part in regular exercise, as it will help in creating a healthy lifestyle.
” The walk for Health will be a continuous exercise  .We are calling on all Nigerians to engage in exercise on a personal  basis ,which should at least be done for three times in a week ,so as to achieve  universal  health  for all in the country”
According to him, the walk for Health is an opportunity to personalise the mandate of the Universal health coverage .
“This is a new beginning, and we are calling on all Nigerians to take preventive measures to promote their health ”

While giving her speech, the Founder of the Well Being Foundation, Mrs Toyin Saraki said the walk is aimed at  achieving universal  health for all .
“The well being Foundation is  pleased to partner with the world health organisation, so as to achieve the universal health coverage for all”

Mrs Saraki commended the effort of WHO for the success of curtailing ebola in the country.
”In Nigeria, we are fully sensitized, but we still have to improve in terms of border surveillance ,to monitor those coming in and going out of the country.
“We cant guarantee, that Ebola will come into Nigeria or not, but we should take enough preventive measures ”
She also advised Nigerians to follow the advisory giving out by NCDC in curtailing Ebola in Nigeria.
The well-being foundation President also charged Nigerians to maintain high level of hygiene both in schools, and in public places.

 

It would be recalled that on the 8th of May, Democratic Republic of Congo, announced a suspected case of Ebola in Congo.

At the end of the 3rd week in May, 2018,  a total of 43 cases of hemorrhagic fever had been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the outbreak was announced on May 8. That number includes 17 confirmed cases of Ebola, 21 probable cases and five suspected cases. Health care workers have been among those infected, according to the health ministry.

There have been 25 deaths among these cases, including one person who died from a confirmed case of Ebola.

A majority of the cases have been reported in Bikoro, the rural health zone where the current outbreak began, some 90 miles south of Mbandaka.

It would be recalled that  a Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer, who flew from Liberia to Lagos on 20 July 2014, fell sick and later infected other Nigerians that had contact with him.

By  22 September 2014,  Nigeria announced it was free of Ebola but  there were 20 cases and 8 deaths , Four of the dead were health care workers who had cared for Sawyer. In all, 529 contacts were followed and all of them completed the 21-day mandatory period of surveillance.
