The Chief Executive Officer of Chowberry, Oscar Ekponimo, has challenged Nigerians on wealth creation.

Speaking at The Platform, a yearly programme organised by Covenant Christian Centre to mark Nigeria’s 58th independence anniversary, Ekponimo said the citizens don’t need to have a million dollars in their account before setting up a business.

“It’s really very practical. You don’t need to have a million dollars or so much more,” he said in Lagos on Monday.

Chowberry is an application that connects retailers to low-income consumers, charity organisations and food-relief agencies.

It allows retailers to scan barcodes on food items and notifies them via the scanned barcodes when these food items are reaching their expiry date. That way, they are able to sell these items to low-income consumers cheap.

But Ekponimo explains that he founded his app in 2013 with the available meagre resources at his disposal.

Five years later, he attributed his success to the Wellspring principles where available talents can be transformed into real value.

He added, “What skills do you have or talents. Can you draw? Can you take a photograph? What do you have already that can be turned into some sort of value?

“What resources do you have? Do you have time? In my case, my resource was the little laptop that I had. So I started in my room day and night designing a prototype fixing it together.”

Last year, Ekponimo won the Rolex Award for Applied Technology. Early this year, he was named one of Times Next Generation Leaders. Currently, he is working towards developing Chowberry into a sustainable social enterprise so that he can realise his goal of feeding millions of hungry Nigerians who are depending on him.

“When I think of the millions of people who are food-deprived, counting on me to give them some relief, to help alleviate their suffering, I am driven to make Chowberry a success. I can never throw in the towel”, he added.
