Lagos Assembly over-reaches self ordering PSP to return to work ― ADC gov candidate

ADCLagos State chapter of African Democratic Congress (ADC), gubernatorial candidate, Prince Olumuyiwa Fafowora, on Monday faulted the State House of Assembly for ordering the Private Sector Participation (PSP), to go back to the streets for waste management and disposal, declaring that the parliament had overstepped its boundary by taking such step.

This is just as the ADC standard bearer, who said he was poised to ensure that no private premises would pay for garbage management and disposal if elected next governor of Lagos, appealed to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to take a decisive action on the way forward in addressing the mounting refuse in all corners of the state, which he said had become too worrisome, promising his support and that of majority of Lagosians.

Prince Fafowora said this at a press conference, which took place at the party secretariat at Onipanu area of the state.

According to the ADC governorship candidate, the function of the state Assembly is to make laws and not to dabble into appointing or signing an agreement with which company or corporation should be put in charge of waste management and disposal.

“Garbage management and refuse collection is the function of the executive, the right thing for the House of Assembly to have done was to invite the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, to explain the role of Visionscape in garbage collection and management in Lagos State and if his explanation is not enough, he will then be encouraged to either terminate the appointment of Visionscape or have another way of letting them know they are not doing their job,” he said.

“The House of Assembly cannot order the PSP to return to work, who gave them the contract to be on the road?” he queried.

Fafowora, however, said the situation on ground right now concerning mounting refuse did not call for buck passing, declaring: The situation now is for us to look for way forward for Lagos State. We don’t even want to make it an election matter.”

“The situation we are now is not to start passing blame, we are talking of environmental disaster, there is garbage everywhere, we don’t want that in the state, all of us are stakeholders.

“The governor should go to the Assembly, call all the stakeholders and tell us the way forward. He is still going to be governor till May 2019, passing the bulk would not do any good,” Fafowora affirmed.

Speaking further, the ADC governorship candidate declared that he would ensure that no private premises pay money to get the refuse from them evacuated by the Agency of government except business premises if elected the next governor of Lagos State.

He said there would be no need for such payment as they were already paying tenement rate to the covers of the state government.

“You know, quote me, no private premises would pay a penny when I become the governor of Lagos State. My business will be with the business premises, they (private premises) are already paying tenement rate, it is double taxation.

“You want me to repeat it again, no private premises is going to pay a kobo for removing a garbage in front of their houses. That is why I say they should stop playing politics with this thing,” he vowed.
