5 housekeepers face N1m theft charge

FIVE housekeepers who allegedly broke into the safe of their employer and stole N1 million cash were on Tuesday docked at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The defendants – Bidemi Jacob, 36; Waheed Onakoya, 50; Lara Hammed, 49; Oluwakemi Tijani, 24; and Olayinka Olayiwola, 28 – are standing trial on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Oladejo Balogun told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences between April and May 8 at No. 32, Atlantic Beach Estate, Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos.

He said that the defendants conspired and broke into the residence of the complainant, one Mrs Adepeju Adebayo, and stole N1 million cash.

According to him, the defendants who worked for the complainant used the opportunity to break into her safe and stole the said money.

Balogun said the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace.

He said the offences contravened Sections 168 (d), 287 (7), 308 (1) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs K. K. Awoyinka, granted them a bail of N500, 000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

Awoyinka adjourned the case until May 23 for trial.
