NANS challenges Buhari on unemployment of Nigerian graduates

THE National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged President Muhammadu to take decisive steps in addressing the challenge of graduate unemployment in Nigeria.

A recent report had estimated that Nigerian tertiary education institutions produce up to 500,000 graduates every year while some Nigerian graduates who study abroad also come home to compete for jobs.

NANS Public Relations Officer, Comrade Adeyemi Azeez, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, attributed the rising security challenges in the country to the large population of youth who are idle as a result of unemployment.

He said the leadership of NANS in this respect commended a philanthropist, Mr Kingsley Ehikioya for his job creation efforts and taking so many unemployed graduates off the labour market.

He added that NANS during the weekend conferred the award of “Icon of Humanity” on him for providing scholarships to over 50 students in various universities across the country as well as homes to over 30 families.

He said: “The national leadership has bestowed a well-deserved honour on a humble philanthropist who has obviously raised the hopes of many Nigerian students, graduates and Nigerians as a whole.

“NANS describes Kinsley Ehikioya as a complete symbol of humanity, in relation to his unrelenting efforts in raising the hopes of Nigerian youths and students.

“It is worthy of note that his company Ehi-Kings has gainfully accommodated lots of graduates and still accommodating more, as this has gone along way in solving the long problem of unemployment in our dear country.

“NANS also commend Ehikioya for his recent grants of scholarship given to Nigerian students from some higher institutions of learning.

“NANS equally appreciates him for providing homes for over 30 families, whom ordinarily had remained hopeless of being a landlord all through there existence life.

“The leadership of NANS, hereby congratulates him on this unique and well-deserved honour, we implore him not to relent, thereby challenge other comfortable Nigerians to also remember the downtrodden at all times,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Mr Kinglsey Ehikioya has called on government at all levels to prioritise job creation so as to address the problem of unemployment in Nigeria.

He noted that solving the problem of unemployment was as directly solving virtually all the problems of the country, eradication social vices inclusive.

He also implored managements of higher institutions to organise sensitization/orientation programmes for both students and lecturers, as that would go a long way in solving the challenge of social vices as well as change the minds of lecturers that demands sex before scoring students.
