NMA urges Imo govt to lift embargo on employment of doctors

IMO chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has urged the state government to lift the embargo on the employment of doctors.

The Imo NMA Chairman, Dr Kyrian Duruewuru, made the call while interacting with newsmen in Owerri on Monday.

He said that the state required more doctors to cater to the teeming population

He added that “recruitment of more medical personnel would make work easier for doctors.

“We want the Imo Government to lift the embargo on employment, especially in the health sector so we can advertise for jobs.

“This will improve our numerical strength, ease pressure on doctors because there are only a few doctors in the country compared with the country’s population of over 180 million.”

The NMA boss also appealed to Federal Government to lift the ban on “sniper” chemical.

He noted that even though the substance was being used by people to commit suicide and used as a preservative on foods which was toxic and very unhealthy, a sniper was an insecticide for other useful purposes.

He added that banning the use of sniper would only expose people to more insect bite and do little or nothing to stop rising cases of suicide in the country.

He said “some people commit suicide by using a simple kitchen knife or by jumping from the high mountain so there’s little or no benefit banning the use of sniper.

“Sniper has useful purposes. I appeal to the government to lift the ban on its use because banning it as a means to curtail suicide is wrong.”
