Tolu Adesina was a runner-up at the 2012 MTN sponsored Project Fame and had been said to be one of the best voices from the competition. He recently switched from mainstream to gospel music and, in an interview with ROTIMI IGE, he reveals how God arrested him.

We have heard that something happened to you recently can you tell us what happened?

Where do I begin from? God had sent a lot of people my way to try to get my attention but I tell you, the pursuit of fame, money and sex can blind a young man. The worst part is when you are so blind to think that in the midst of all, you are still right with God just because you dress up and go to church on most Sundays. It is the devil’s deceit.

One day, God sent someone to me and the encounter made me stop and think deeply. I was a guest judge for Project Fame’s preliminary auditions alongside other great people like @igesings @joypanam and others. While we were having breakfast, Cobhams Asuquo walked in.

Naturally, I went to greet him. He shook my hand and I said “It’s Tolu sir” and he replied with something like “Oh… Tolu how are you? And how is Don Jazzy? I have something to tell you…I know you’re doing well but God showed me that you’re meant for more. Your specific gift is meant for the kingdom of God. Answer God quickly or you might struggle.”  I was literally blown away by that statement. I thanked him but I was uneasy all through the auditions. As profound as that incident was, I didn’t make a turn around right then because the lust of the world had taken toll on me and deceived me to think I would be giving up too much.

It was not until 31st December last year, that my life changed when I met with God one-on-one. That is a story for another day. My conversation with Cohbams was one of the factors that led me here. In December last year, I was already missing home and my parents. So, I left Lagos and travelled back home to Kaduna. Very few people knew I was back because I wanted to just spend time with my folks but on the 30th, I went to my home church for Sunday service. Everyone was happy to see me. My pastor, Reverend Barnabas Arastus, insisted that on the night of the 31st, I would lead worship before he came up  (it was a set up from heaven).

I sighed in reaction but I agreed. The night was blessed with so many anointed ministers and when it was my turn, I got up there and began singing. In the midst of it I heard a voice say “I have been waiting for you for seven years.”  This broke my heart. I went on my knees and could not hold back tears. I dropped the microphone and went back to my seat where I prayed a simple prayer: “Lord I am sorry for running from purpose all these years and I am grateful that you waited for me. I surrender to you totally today. Where ever you lead, I will follow.” I felt a kind of peace I had not felt in seven years come into my heart.

How did people in your life handle this change?

It was a tremendous turn around for me. It came with conflict and losing friends, fans, followers and industry credibility but I gained purpose in God and nothing else compares to that.

So, what is next for Tolu?

Well, I just dropped a single titled “Oshe Baba”. It is available on all platforms. More information can be gotten about it from my Instagram page, @iamthatolu. From here on, service to God and humanity will be my priority
