Parents should watch children’s activities ― Lagos anti-cultism unit

The Head, Anti-Cultism Unit, Lagos State Police Command, CSP Uduak Udom has urged parents to pay close attention to children’s activities in order to eschew them from joining cult groups.

Udom noted that making available the necessities of life to the children should not be the end of it, but constantly checking on what they do in their presence and absence.

He gave this advice during the Police Community Relations Committee and NPP walk against cultism, drug abuse and other crimes, held yesterday in Lagos.

“My advice to parents is you should take interest in looking into the activities of your kids. It is not enough for you to pay school fees. It is not enough for you to provide other necessities of life without watching your children under your care.

“This is because when some of the children get involved, they don’t want their parents to know because the parents are less interested in the activities of these boys and girls.

“So, my advice is when you are paying school fees, also get to know what your child is doing outside and in the school because cultism can only truncate the end of an individual.

“Just like I told you, the young people no longer find cultism attractive anymore. So many of the cultists that were caught have been sent to court.

“Some of them willingly came out and denounce that they don’t want to belong anymore,” Udom said.

He stated that the crime rate in the state has been reduced to the lowest ebb via the establishment of the anti-cultism unit, in collaboration with the Police Community Relations Committee.

Meanwhile, speaking also, the chairman, Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Lagos Command, Sowemimo Kehinde urged youths in the state to get out of crime due to their relevance to the society.

He lauded the effectiveness of the advocacy in the reduction of criminal activities in the state, assuring not to rest of his oars.

“The Youths in the State should get out of crime. They should get out of criminalities because they are relevant to the development of the society.

“We thank God that it is reducing. They are getting to the awareness that they can be useful to the society and that the crime will only lead them to problems.

“We will continue to educate our youths. We will continue to sensitize them to make them get out of the vices around.

“We will not stop. We will not relent. It will be impactful and changing them gradually,” Sowemimo said.

Sowemimo explained that the PCRC in conjunction with other relevant authorities will deploy other means like workshops and training in hyping the advocacy with the sole aim of bringing the menace to an end.

“We will be doing some other things as we are going along in this advocacy to concretize the achievements.

“We will be organizing workshops and training for them so that we will reduce the crime and criminalities in our society,” Sowemimo said.

Speaking also, Lagos State Intervention Officer, Nigerian Policing Programme, Ivy Bassey explained that the essence of the Walk is to create awareness about the increase in crime and drug abuse in the state.

She noted that efforts exerted towards this awareness will help in nipping the issue in the bud.

“The whole essence of this walk is to create awareness about the increase in crime and drug abuse within Lagos State.

“We are working with the PCRC of the State Command on how to create more awareness for us to know that the menace is something that everyone needs to come together to ensure that we bring a stop to it” She said.
