The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen

THE Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen on Monday charged court registrars and secretaries of Judicial Service Commissions/committee to ensure that both judicial officers and court staff work in synergy to ensure that the nation’s judiciary function optimally.

The CJN gave the charge in Abuja while declaring open a workshop, with the theme, “Applying Best Practices in Court Administration,” organised for the court officials by the National Judicial Institute (NJI).

Justice Onnoghen said the effective and efficient performance of the duties of court registrars and secretaries of Judicial Service Commissions/committee will enable the judiciary to run smoothly like a well-oiled machine.

He said the ever-expanding duties of participants at the workshop require them to become court administrators taking cognizance of the fact that they manage both the human and material resources of the court.

“Thus, you must be honest and be persons of exceptional integrity. Your actions are like a beacon of light that other staff can aspire to follow upon for guidance,” he stated.

Onnoghen said, the workshop is premised upon the need to bring the participants up to speed with innovations and developments in the judiciary.

It will further afford them the opportunity to dialogue on topical issues, especially in the application of best practices in the courts.

The theme of the workshop, he said captures efforts in ensuring better justice delivery in the country, which he said has become imperative especially if justice is viewed within the context of service delivery.

“The theme of this workshop underscores the fact that the public perception of the judiciary is largely determined by how we apply best practices in the business of the court.

“Thus, when the top echelons of the judiciary are properly trained, fully equipped and highly conscientious, then our judiciary will function optimally and further deepen public confidence in our ability to administer justice without fear or favour, affection or ill-will,” the CJN noted.

He commended the NJI, under the leadership of the Administrator, Justice Rosaline Bozimo for providing excellent leadership and deep commitment in the discharge of the Institute’s mandate.
